Year End Wrap-Up!

Writer's picture: CynthiaCynthia

I can't believe 2018 is almost over. It has only been two months since my last update but you have no idea how much has happened in that short amount of time!

Since my last post, Britt and I have worked really hard to enter the Oneonta music scene. Right after I posted on October 31st, Britt and I were offered a gig; a 15-minute set during the intermission for the Student Fashion Society's Fall 2018 Fashion Show! Britt accompanied me as I sang 3 covers and 1 original. The audience was great! I was a little more nervous than usual because I hadn't performed non-musical theatre music in front of an audience in a few years but we had so much fun. We even got some great pictures from our friend, Heather Ward.

A week later, Britt and I entered a competition to be signed to Red Dragon Records; SUNY Oneonta's record label that signs one new artist every year. We made a short EPK video to introduce ourselves, and performed a song live for the Music Industry Club. We lost to a very talented and developed band who had more experience in the Oneonta music scene so the results were pretty fair, but we did get more exposure. People came up to us afterward and said we were great and we even had people wanting us to play at their house venues and who wanted to record with us! Look out for us, maybe you will see us next semester playing at The Nut!

Next, we started recording! We went in the studio with a good friend of Britt's, Sam Morgan. We started recording "skin//ache", a song that Britt wrote a few years ago, one of my personal favorites because of the irregular rhythm and beautifully smooth, lyrical melody. We will be setting a weekly time next semester to go into the studio so that we can finish an EP before I graduate in May (yikes!)

Next, we performed an original song at Midnight Madness, a semester-end sketch comedy event for the Mask and Hammer Theatre Club. There were about 30 people in attendance that loved "Bonnie and Cyde", a song that Britt wrote in the 10th grade! After this, people were even more excited to come see our show at DadShack that next weekend!

The absolute HIGHLIGHT of our semester had to be our performance at DadShack. On December 8th, the beloved Oneonta house venue DadShack turned into MomShack for their last show of the semester, featuring only female fronted acts. We were first of course, being the newbies. We opened for Midnight Cartunes, Rayna Cooper, Dear Cecilia and Tiny Blue Ghost! It was not only and amazing opportunity, but it helped us realize a few things:

1. Adam Becker (the guitarist who joined Britt and I for the performance) is an absolute genius on the guitar. He created counter-melodies and alternate layers that brought new life to Britt's songs and we could not have performed without him.

2. The SUNY Oneonta Theatre Department is our biggest fan. There were at least 15 theatre kids in the front row who had only heard "Bonnie and Clyde" once that past weekend but were cheering and singing along! I don't know if that says more about the theatre kids or Britt's ability to write a really catchy hook.

3. Although I had been saying it for months, we REALLY needed a band name and social media presence. So finally, we came up with a name better than "Britt and Cynthia"... our name is "Asking For It"! This name means a lot to me as a member of the LGBT+ community and a woman, and I hope our music will push the envelope as much as our thought-provoking band name does.

You can follow our band on Instagram @askingforit_music and I also made a solo artist account where I can post individual updates as well. You can follow that account @singin.cindy!

Thank you everyone for a wonderful end of the semester AND the year! Big things are planned for next semester! Hope to see you there! Your support means absolutely everything to us.

See you soon!
